My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
ย (Galatians 4:19 NIV)
When God decided to create Adam, there was a conversation within the Godhead that revealed a quality He wanted Adam to have and its purpose. He said, โ…Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the groundโ (Genesis 1:26 NIV).
The statement “image and likeness” suggests that God wanted Adam to be like Jesus Christ, who is described as the express image of His being (Hebrews 1:3) and the very likeness of God (Colossians 1:15). Having His image suggests that you have His character and are able to operate like Him. And the purpose of making us in His image is so that we could rule (Genesis 1:26).
When Adam was placed in the garden (the domain for his rulership), he had not yet attained the fullness of the image and likeness of God. Those attributes were represented in trees, and when he partook of their fruits, he became like God in that area. Adam was not fully mature, yet he was placed in the position of rulership. This was the reason he fell.
The fall of Adam was not a surprise to God, but He allowed it to help us understand the importance of the process, which is the period God allows us to grow by taking us through seasons of wilderness, chastening, delays, and sufferings, etc., before the manifestation of His promises. For when the last Adam (Jesus) manifested as a man, He went through seasons of training in the hidden before He was revealed, for “Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8).
One in whose heart the image of Christ is fully formed has a posture of humility that yields in obedience to the Word of God, as described of Jesus in Philippians 2:5โ11. Such people are established in their position of rulership, unlike Adam, who fell.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask Him to form His image in our hearts.
