Then the LORD said to Moses, โ€œTell the Israelites this: โ€˜You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.โ€™
Exodus 20:22 KJV

Many Christians think of heaven as a distant place we will ascend to when Jesus returns to take His Church. While certain passages of Scripture give this impression, there is a deeper understanding of this truth.

Heaven is not merely a place above the earth; it is the state of being conscious of Godโ€™s presence. To see this clearly, consider when God came down to speak with the children of Israel in the wilderness. Scripture records:

Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly… Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain…
Exodus 19:18, 20 NKJV

Here we see that God came down to a physical location on earthโ€”Mount Sinaiโ€”and spoke audibly to the Israelites. Yet when recounting the event, God said:

Then the LORD said to Moses, โ€œTell the Israelites this: โ€˜You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.โ€™
Exodus 20:22 KJV

In other words, even though His presence was on Mount Sinai, God declared that He spoke from heaven. The mountain became heaven because His presence was there. This reveals that heaven is not confined to a place beyond earthโ€”it is wherever Godโ€™s presence is recognized.

This understanding explains how a Christian lives in two realms at once: physically on earth, but spiritually seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). When you grasp this truth, you no longer strive to โ€œmake heavenโ€ at the end of your lifeโ€”you realize you are already in heaven. And with this awareness, you can begin to experience the power of the world to come right now.

Prayer Points

Letโ€™s thank God for His word. Letโ€™s ask Him to help us live daily in the awareness of His presence and experience the reality of being in heaven now.
