Recently, I heard a man of God share a story of a missionary who was killed in a village he was serving. As the villagers killed him, he released a curse on the people, which they were still enduring until God decided to show them mercy through the prayers of another man of God. As I heard this story, what came to my mind was that the missionary missed an opportunity to reflect Jesus.
When God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26), He was saying that man should be a reflection of Him. We reflect God when we exhibit His character, and God’s character is love. The nature of love Christ showed us and expects us to express is one that is demonstrated even when others do not deserve it. For He demonstrated His love for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8).
The missionary in the story had an opportunity to be in the same position Jesus Christ was when He was hung on the cross, but unlike Jesus, he chose to curse rather than release forgiveness. This was a missed opportunity on his side. However, there was one who didn’t miss the opportunity, and that person was Stephen. While being stoned to death, Scripture records that he prayed for their forgiveness (Acts 7:59–60), and when speaking the word, his face shone like an angel (Acts 6:15).
Releasing forgiveness to one who truly deserves condemnation is not something a natural man can do, but we can access help from God to act like Christ in such situations. This help comes when we pray, and also when we understand that by releasing forgiveness, we are offering a pathway for those who condemn us to receive salvation—like Paul, who was saved after supporting the killing of Stephen (Acts 8:1; Acts 9:1–6).
Love is the greatest evangelical tool, as Christ is seen when we love (John 13:35).

Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask Him to help us reflect Him by loving as He has loved us.
