17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Romans 5:17 NIV
God has called us to be priests, prophets, and kings through Christ Jesus. Priests, because we are to pray not just for ourselves but also for others, prophets, because we are to proclaim the word of God and kings, because we are to rule over the nations (Revelation 1:6, Revelation 5:10, 1 Peter 2:9). Today, I would like to emphasise the rulership aspect of our calling in Christ Jesus.
As a king or queen, you rule over people. However, just as Jesus, who is our King and therefore the King of kings, rules with justice, compassion, and love, that is the same way we are to rule. In which kingdom did you ever see a prince or princess be made a King or Queen without being trained? In the same way, after we are born into the family of God through faith in Christ Jesus, God must train us to become like Jesus (full of love and compassion) before He entrusts us with power.
The earthly kings and queens are trained mentally and physically. Similarly, we are also trained in two parts: the mental is the acquisition of knowledge of the word of God, and the physical for us is the suffering we go through as children of God in the form of trials and tribulations through which God trains us in proper godliness. The bible, referring to Jesus, says, “Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8 NIV). You can replace that “obedience” with any godly trait you know, e.g kindness, compassion, patience, etc. These traits can be learned through suffering or trials.
Again, if we compare to a professional training, after you have done all the theory, you need to get into the practicals for you to really complete your training. Similarly, if you only know godliness in theory by reading or hearing of the word of God, you might not be effective as a King modelling after Christ. You need to enter the practicals which come through trials or suffering. As the bible says below:
17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:17
So, in conclusion, the simple word of encouragement and exhortation today is that we should embrace the trials God has placed in our way because He is doing it to train us to become Kings and Queens like Jesus Christ. As the opening verse says, God has made provision for abundant grace and the gift of righteousness in Christ Jesus for us to go through with His training.
