Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
โ€” Matthew 10:16 KJV

When Jesus Christ was sending out His disciples, He didnโ€™t warn them against the devil or principalities, but said โ€œbeware of menโ€ฆโ€ (Matthew 10:17 KJV). Knowing the nature of men, He understood that the disciples were more at risk of evil from man than from the devil in hell. However, the strategy He gave them to avoid the danger men posed was that they should be โ€œwise as serpents, and harmless as dovesโ€ (Matthew 10:16).

To be wise as a serpent means to be discerning, cautious, and strategically aware of dangers and opportunities. Jesus Christ demonstrated this attribute in certain decisions He made. For example, when He was about to be stoned by the Jews, Scripture records that He โ€œโ€ฆhid himself, slipping away from the temple groundsโ€ (John 8:59 NIV). At another time, when they plotted to take His life, Jesus โ€œโ€ฆno longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead, He withdrew to a region near the wildernessโ€ (John 11:54 NIV).

Jesus Christ exhibited caution and took steps to avoid harm, despite being God and almighty. In fact, it was recorded that โ€œโ€ฆJesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all peopleโ€ (John 2:24). That is, because He knew the danger men posed, He did not entrust Himself to them. This was Him walking in wisdom.

Apostle Paul also demonstrated wisdom as a serpent when he took advantage of the differences in belief between the Pharisees and Sadducees during his interrogation. He declared that he was a Pharisee, which brought division among them (Acts 23:6โ€“8), and in the process won the support of some Pharisees who had initially sought to kill him. At another point, when he was about to be flogged, he mentioned that he was a Roman citizen, which caused the soldiers to withdraw from him (Acts 22:25โ€“29 NIV).

Walking wisely will help you have the humility to take steps that lead to your preservation, as Jesus did, and to speak words that turn those intending to harm you away, as Paul did. When Nebuchadnezzar sent his guard to kill the wise men of Babylon, it was recorded that โ€œDaniel spoke to him with wisdom and tactโ€โ€”which led to him and his friends being spared and given time to seek God concerning the kingโ€™s dream.

Walking wisely will save you from the danger men pose.
