Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.
Proverbs 3:9 (NIV)

At first glance, giving might seem like a simple transactionโ€”offering something we have to someone in need or to the church, while hoping to receive a blessing from God. But biblically, it’s a form of worship. Itโ€™s a mirror that reflects our heart toward God and others.

From the beginning, God called His people to give the first and the bestโ€”not the leftovers, as a sign of them honouring Him. We do this, not from the place of convenience, as giving is meant to be sacrificialโ€”an act of faith and love that acknowledges God as the ultimate provider.

King David understood this deeply. When he had an opportunity to offer a gift he could give to God at no personal cost, he refused it, saying:
โ€œI will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.โ€
2 Samuel 24:24

Giving, in its truest form, is a reflection of Godโ€™s own heart. After all, โ€œGod so loved the world that He gave His one and only Sonโ€ฆโ€
John 3:16

He didnโ€™t give out of abundanceโ€”He gave everything (the only son He had).

Different types of givers exist.

Auto Giver: Gives spontaneously and from compassion, like the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:33โ€“35).

Conventional Giver: Gives because itโ€™s expected or because others are doing it (Matthew 6:1โ€“2).

Moral Giver: Gives from a sense of duty, but may lack joy or deeper spiritual connection (Micah 6:6โ€“8).

Christ-like Giver: Gives sacrificially, joyfully, and lovinglyโ€”like Jesus, and like the widow who gave all she had (Luke 21:1โ€“4).

Which of these are you?

God isnโ€™t just interested in what we giveโ€”He cares about how and why we give. Christ-like giving is marked by love, trust, and a deep desire to honour God. This is what God wants from us.

What does your current pattern of giving say about your heart toward God?

PRAYER POINTS

  • Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask God to help us to give not just with our hands, but with our hearts.
  • Let’s ask Him to teach us to give like Jesus, sacrificially, joyfully, and lovingly.
