19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.ย  ย  Ephesians 5: 19-20

Music is a wonderful gift from God. It’s no news that music can give you a good cheer and help you relax. The bible records different instances where we see the power and importance of music.

We see in 1 Samuel 16: 23 how an Evil spirit causing depression left King Saul whenever David played some music. In 2 Kings 3:15, we see how the prophet Elisha requested a Harpist to play some music, which caused the hand of the Lord to come upon him and enable him to prophesy.

There is indeed power in music, but as you probably know, the devil too can turn this tool for evil, for instance, by inspiring his agents to combine beautiful melodies with terribly wrong lyrics, lyrics that invite demons and cause sin. That’s why we must be watchful of the lyrics of the songs we listen to, even if they appear to be gospel music.

However, instead of allowing the devil to hijack this beautiful gift of music, our opening verse encourages us to sing and make music in our hearts to the Lord. As you go about your day-to-day activities, we can sing songs of praise even in our hearts. This does not only have to be when you are in a church service. This way, you can relax while reminding yourself of God’s goodness and giving thanks.

Remember from the two verses I shared ( 1 Sam 16:23 and 2 Kings 3:15 ), we see that we can use music to relax and, at the same time, create a conducive atmosphere for the Spirit of the Lord to act through us. So sing spiritually edifying songs to relax and activate the Holy Spirit’s power working through you.ย  Also, when we are singing or listening to worship songs, we should not allow ourselves to be carried away by the beautiful melody that we forget to contemplate God, who must be the focus of our worship and praise.ย

The bible says, “… the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). And one of the ways we experience that joy of the Lord is when we sing to the Lord. This joy gives us the strength to submit to the will of God.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for the word today. Let’s pray that God will help us to often sing songs of worship and thanksgiving from our hearts to God.
