And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together
(Genesis 22:8 KJV)
For some days now, I have been revealing God as our provider. I mentioned that though He is our provider, there are things we need to do to see His provision, such as calling Him our provider. I also mentioned that God only provides for what is His will, not our excesses or lust, and that He sees how we steward that which He has handed over to us.
Now, though God is our source, He has channels through which He provides for us. However, we must never grow so used to a particular channel that we are no longer willing to depend on God but instead trust in that channel. For example, in a time of famine, God sustained Elijah, as he drank from the brook (1 Kings 17:2-6). However, the brook dried up and God spoke again, saying, โGo at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay thereโ (1 Kings 17:9).
If Elijah had grown so used to the brook and stopped listening to God, he would have missed out on Godโs means of provision for the next season โ the widow of Zarephath. Learning to depend on God for sustenance is a training of trust, where He teaches us to have confidence in Him for provision. When this confidence shifts from God, who is the source, to the channel He used at a particular time, it shows we have idolised that channel, which hinders the flow of provision.
Another thing that stood out in the story of Elijah was that the means God used to sustain him were not the likely channels. Ravens are known to be very selfish birds, and widows are associated with lack, yet these were the means God used to sustain Elijah in a time of need. This means we should not judge the means God uses by its appearance, and that it is actually God causing them to sustain us.
In some very difficult moments in my life, the people God used to be a blessing to me were not necessarily those whom I had been a blessing to, or those I felt I had a good relationship with and expected to understand, but those whose hearts God had touched. He allows this so that men, or a channel (which can be a job), do not become our hope, as He alone is.
Again, though it looked like the widow of Zarephath was providing for Elijah, it was Elijahโs presence in the house that provoked a ceaseless flow of resources to her, and this relationship led to her son being raised back to life (1 Kings 17:17-24). So, Elijah was actually a greater blessing to them. In the same way, the channels God uses to sustain us are actually being blessed by their association with us.
Because we know Him as our provider, our heads are raised up to Him, and not to a means He uses in a particular season. He is our hope and our rest.
Prayer Point
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs ask Him to help us trust in Him, and not the means He uses to bless us.
