Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Titus 2:12 KJV
Some years ago, I arrived in a new nation. I met some of my cousins who were there before me, and they were counselling me on how to succeed in that land. As they spoke, I heard in my heart “plan for eternity”.
Many people live this life with the intention of having the best that this life has to offer, not minding if they have to go against God’s word. But as Christians, we are to live with eternity in view, knowing that we will receive the reward of all we do in the flesh in the life to come, good or bad. This is why scripture encourages us to “…live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world” (Titus 2:13), as we wait for the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Following Jesus comes at a cost, and that cost includes letting go of our fleshly desires. So our goal in life should not be about attaining the human standard of success, but doing His will. For this reason, we must walk as wise, seeking to understand what the Lord’s will is (Ephesians 5:17). Our reward in the life to come will be based on the measure that we accomplished His will.
Though the reward starts in this life, as Jesus Christ mentioned in Luke 18:30, the revelation of the rewards in eternity will enable us to let go of earthly pleasures and attachments to follow Jesus. The disciples of Jesus Christ left their jobs and businesses to follow Him. They did not do this because of what they could gain on earth, but because of the eternal reward. The rich man who couldn’t leave his earthly possessions to follow Jesus in Matthew 19 didn’t see beyond this life.
Apostle Paul said, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Corinthians 15:19), so we are to live being conscious of the hope in the world to come. This awareness will help our decision-making to be in line with His will.
Prayer Points
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us live our lives being aware that our reward in the life to come is dependent on our works in this present life.
