There have been many movies and novels written about love, but none of them resounds as the Gospel. The Gospel is the greatest love story ever told. This story, the Gospel, wasn’t just communicated with words, but indicated through the lives of certain individuals in Scripture.
When revealing the events that preceded the death and resurrection of Jesus, Matthew shared an important act that revealed the heart of the Gospel. When Jesus was before Pilate, a reason for death wasn’t found in Jesus by him. Jesus was judged innocent by both Pilate and Herod, who were prominent governmental figures of His time. Pilate, wanting to set Jesus free, asked if he could release Him, following his manner of releasing a prisoner to the people at certain times (Matthew 27:15).
However, instead of Jesus, the Jews requested Pilate to release Barabbas. Now, unlike Jesus, Barabbas was a guilty individual deserving of death, as he rebelled against the government of his day. In this story, we find a guilty person being set free for an innocent person to die in his place. Like Barabbas, every one of us was deserving of death, for we have all sinned. However, the death that was due to us was placed on Jesus to bear at the cross of Calvary. He died in our place, so we can have His life. This is the greatest love expressed.
Though the Jews requested Barabbas to be released because they so wanted Jesus Christ to die, God allowed this for us to see the depth of His love. He took our place in death, so we can take His place in life.
The Gospel is a declaration of the divine exchange that happened at the cross of Calvary, where He who knew no sin became sin so we can be the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).
PRAYER POINTS
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us see His love expressed at the cross of Calvary for us.
