โ€œShe will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.โ€
โ€” Matthew 1:21 (NIV)

The name Jesus means โ€œGod savesโ€, and it encompasses all that Jesus Christ came to do on earthโ€”to save souls. This was His ministry, which He fulfilled with unwavering zeal. Even in the most unpleasant situations, He was still busy saving souls. Soul-winning was His food (John 4:34).

At the cross of Calvary, where He was nailed after being beaten by the Roman soldiers, He said to one of the criminals beside Him, โ€œToday, you will be with me in paradiseโ€ (Luke 23:43). That man was hell-bound, but thankfully, the Saviour was near.

One of the Roman soldiers who participated in His crucifixion, after witnessing the signs that followed His death, declared, โ€œSurely, He is the Son of Godโ€ (Mark 15:39). That confession revealed a regenerated heart โ€” one transformed by faith in Christ. The same soldier who moments earlier showed no mercy was now being saved by the One hanging on the cross.

Both in pain and in death, Jesus remained a Saviour. Who He was did not change because of the circumstances He faced. Even in the depths of hell, Jesus went and preached to the imprisoned spirits (1 Peter 3:19โ€“20), continuing His mission to save souls wherever He went.

Like Jesus, we must not allow our circumstances to stop us from witnessing to the lost. True selflessness means caring for the souls of others even when our own situations are difficult.

His ministryโ€”the salvation of soulsโ€”has been entrusted to us. We must fulfil it even in discomfort. Paul and Silas did so when, though imprisoned, they led the jailer and his family to salvation (Acts 16:25โ€“34). Likewise, Joseph used his gift to interpret dreams while in prison (Genesis 40:1โ€“23).

Who we are in Christ does not change because of where we are. Like Jesus, we must fulfil the ministry of reconciliation at all times, even in seasons of hardship (2 Corinthians 5:18โ€“21).

Prayer Point

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today. Letโ€™s ask Him to help us fulfil the ministry of Jesusโ€”the salvation of soulsโ€”at all times.
