Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.
โ 2 Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV)
Based on what Christ has accomplished, the enemy has no power over a believer. Yet, though he has been stripped of all authority, he still possesses a weapon โ his mouth โ with which he deceives. This is something we must not be ignorant of.
Although he has grown old (Revelation 20:2), the strategy of the serpentโs deception has not changed. When he approached Eve in the garden, he convinced her that disobeying Godโs word would not lead to death โ that there were no consequences for sin (Genesis 3:4). That same lie is still at work today, often disguised as a false understanding of grace.
Even though the new and living way has been opened and we all have access to the throne of our Father โ where we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16) โ this access does not mean that God has permitted us to live in sin. Scripture warns us plainly: โIf we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of Godโ (Hebrews 10:26โ27, NIV).
God still judges sin, even under the New Covenant. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church, he rebuked them for their sins while partaking of the Holy Communion, saying, โThat is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleepโ (1 Corinthians 11:30). This revealed the judgment of God among them. Likewise, when a man in the church was caught in fornication, Paul declared, โHand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lordโ (1 Corinthians 5:5).
Grace is not a licence to sin; it is divine empowerment to do the will of God. When we find ourselves yielding to sin because we presume upon Godโs forgiveness, we have fallen into the enemyโs deception and risk exposing ourselves to Godโs judgment.
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs ask Him to help us walk in His fear, live in obedience, and keep His commandments.
