For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.ย  โ€” 1 Corinthians 15:10 KJV

Grace is a subject many believers often misunderstand. For some, grace means permission to do as they please without consequences. This is not only far from the truth, but it is also a potent tool in the hands of the devil to deceive.

When the serpent approached Eve to lure her into sin against God, one of his tactics was to make her believe there would be no consequences for her actions. He said, โ€œYou shall not surely dieโ€ฆโ€ (Genesis 3:4). Likewise, those who see grace as a license to sin without consequence have been deceived as Eve was in the garden. With this understanding, what then is grace?

Simply put, grace is Godโ€™s help โ€” His divine enablement to do His will. There are two aspects of the grace of God: the qualifying grace and the empowering grace. Both aspects are revealed in Paulโ€™s statement in 1 Corinthians 15:9โ€“10.

When Paul said, โ€œI am what I am by the grace of God,โ€ after mentioning that he was the least of the apostles and unworthy to be called one, he was referring to the qualifying grace of God.

The qualifying grace of God is what makes us chosen and positioned to become whatever God has ordained us to be in His Kingdom. This grace is blind to our natural abilities or weaknesses. When God told Jeremiah, โ€œBefore I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nationsโ€ (Jeremiah 1:5), He was declaring that grace had qualified Jeremiah to be a Prophet before he ever did any good or evil. His calling was not based on his righteousness.

However, when Paul added, โ€œโ€ฆI laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me,โ€ he was revealing the empowering grace of God. This grace enables us to do what is required of us โ€” not only in fulfilling our calling but also in our daily walk with God. Therefore, grace doesnโ€™t just qualify the called; it empowers the called to do what is required.

Our salvation is a call into fellowship with the Divine (1 Corinthians 1:9). Though we were once sinners, the grace of God has qualified us to share in this fellowship with the Godhead. Yet, this same grace empowers us to walk righteously and to fulfil all that He requires of us.

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today. Letโ€™s also ask Him to grant us a deeper understanding of His grace and to help us grow continually in it.
