“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night.
I Samuel 15:11 NKJV
Reading through what was recorded about King Saul reveals one who missed an opportunity. If Saul’s kingdom had been established, it would have been through his lineage that Christ would have come. When he fell, David was chosen in his place.
When the Lord said of Saul, “he has turned back from following me,” in today’s scriptural verse, it infers that Saul once followed God. This was evident in his humble attitude at the time of being made king. However, Saul’s mistake was that he feared the people he was to lead more than God. This was revealed when he said, “… because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.” (I Samuel 15:24 NKJV) when Samuel confronted him about disobeying the Lord’s instructions by sparing the life of Agag.
While Saul’s heart was after pleasing the people, David was described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). A heart that is after God’s own heart chooses to do what pleases the Lord, even if it displeases man. Unlike Saul, we must be people who please the Lord.
You are making Saul’s mistake when what you preach is what will please the people and not what God is saying to us. We are making Saul’s mistake when we side with the opinion of the people instead of that which He has expressed in the Word. Those who walk in Saul’s footsteps are replaced by God.
Something to know that will help you avoid Saul’s mistake is that God is your source and not the people. Saul feared losing the loyalty of the people, but forgot he received the kingdom from God. Knowing that whatever you have came from God will free you from the temptation of fearing the people.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to fear Him and not the people He has called us to lead.
