โ€œBut now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.โ€ โ€” 1 Samuel 13:14 (KJV)

There is something sobering yet beautiful about the way God works โ€” He calls us, equips us, and entrusts us with His assignments. Yet, He remains God all by Himself. His purposes do not depend on any man; they depend on His will.

Years ago, Bishop David Oyedepo once said that God told him, โ€œI have one hundred people who can replace you.โ€ That statement carries a deep truth: God always has replacements.

God is attracted to weakness, as His strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV). That is, when God is looking for one who will fulfil a particular task, He goes for the weakest person for it, as a weak person would depend on His grace. He does this for the praise of His glorious grace (Ephesians 1:6). So, when we find ourselves being used by God in any area in the kingdom, our hearts should not be lifted above others, but we should humble ourselves to do what He says, for we can be replaced with a better option.

King Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin, which was the least tribe in Israel by population (Benjamin was also the lastborn of Jacob). Yet God chose him (Saul) to be king over all Israel. Despite this kindness shown to him by God, he chose to please the people over God by doing what they said and not what God instructed (1 Samuel 15:24). In place of Saul, God chose David, whom God affirmed to be a man after His own heart and who was said to be better than Saul (1 Samuel 13:14, 15:28). In the area Saul failed, David succeeded.

Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob, also lost his inheritance because he defiled his fatherโ€™s bed (Genesis 49:3โ€“4). The honour of the firstborn passed to Joseph (1 Chronicles 5:1โ€“2). Where Reuben fell, Joseph stood โ€” resisting temptation when Potipharโ€™s wife sought to seduce him.

Vashti was the wife of King Ahasuerus, who was replaced by Esther when she disobeyed the kingโ€™s instruction (Esther 1:10โ€“22; 2:1โ€“4). Unlike Vashti, Esther was a very obedient lady who did all Mordecai told her, even when it could cost her life.

These examples whisper the same truth: God has replacements for every assignment.

If God called you, it is an honour โ€” not an entitlement. Stay humble. Stay obedient. Stay dependent. Because when we stop saying โ€œYesโ€ to God, there is always another who will.

Let us therefore walk before Him with reverence and humility, serving Him with sincerity of heart, knowing that the privilege to be used by Him is grace, not right.

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank God for His word today. Letโ€™s ask Him to help us not to lose our position in Him, and to keep us humble and obedient.
