Every life is a building project. Each day, decision by decision, obedience by obedience, we lay bricks that form the structure of our future. Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a sobering truth: What you build on determines whether you will stand or fall when the storms come.
In the story told by Jesus, two houses faced identical storms—rain, floods, and fierce winds.
But only one house remained standing.
The difference wasn’t the weather. It wasn’t the appearance of their buildings. It was the foundation.
From Jesus’ sermons, the wise build on the rock.
This rock is not merely listening to Jesus’ words but living them. Obedience is the concrete that locks our foundation to Christ. It may take longer, require more discipline, and feel less convenient—but it is stable, strong, and dependable.
The foolish build on sand. Sand is easier. Sand is quick. Sand looks fine until trouble reveals the truth. Hearing without doing is spiritual self-deception. It creates a life that looks strong on the outside but cannot withstand pressure on the inside.
Surely, the storms will come, for Jesus did not say if but when. So, the rain of disappointment, the floods of hardship, the winds of temptation, the storms of grief, loss, or uncertainty will surely come. When they come, they will test your foundation—not your beauty, not your gifts, not your popularity, but your obedience to God’s Word.
Those who live in obedience build their lives to last; they are established in the Kingdom.
