For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age. — Titus 2:11–12 (NIV)
Contrary to popular opinion, grace actually empowers us to walk in righteousness. Though this may sound strange to those who see grace as a license to sin, it is the truth. As seen in our scriptural text for today, grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and, consequently, to live righteously.
However, to access this empowering dimension of grace, there are certain things we must do intentionally, and one of them is renewing our minds. Apostle Paul said, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2). You cannot say no to something if you cannot recognize it as sin. But when we fill our hearts with the Word of God, we will be able to discern what is the will of God and choose it, and what is not the will of God and reject it.
Being able to recognize what is the will of God and what is not is an ability that wisdom gives. Therefore, intentionally asking God for wisdom daily empowers you to say no to evil and yes to righteousness.
Another way to strengthen your resolve to say no is by asking God for help. It is possible to know what is right and still choose to do wrong (like Solomon) if you lack understanding of how to access God’s help. Simply saying, “Lord, help me,” is sufficient.
Again, knowing the reward of doing good and the judgment that follows choosing evil will help you say no to sin. Fire is very beautiful to behold; despite this, many people know better than to touch it because they understand that it burns. In the same way, though sin may look enticing, if you understand the suffering it brings, you will avoid it.
