For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
But to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 1:24 (NIV)
Yesterday, while in church, the pastor admonished everyone present to make friends with the wise, for if one walks with the wise, they too will become wise (Prov. 13:20). Though I agree 100% with his admonition, a question arose in my heart: How do you know one who is wise?
In the world we live in, those who walk in the wisdom of God are often seen as fools. Truly, it takes being a “fool” to choose to obey God when doing otherwise may profit the flesh more. As Jesus Christ said, wisdom is justified by her children (Luke 7:35). It is the products—the outcomes—of wisdom that reveal it as true wisdom, not merely the act itself.
For example, there was nothing beautiful about the cross. How could Christ the King dying as a criminal be seen as wise? Yet, from what appeared foolish, the souls of many are being saved today. Again, how could one build an ark and warn of a coming flood when no signs of rain were present? Surely, the scholars of Noah’s day would have seen this not as wisdom but as foolishness. Yet, that very act preserved humanity and the animals during the flood that eventually came.
We see that the acts of God’s wisdom do not always appear wise at the beginning, but their end justifies them as wisdom indeed. Those who operate in the wisdom of God are usually seen as fools by those who are perishing, but the outcome of their lives justifies their decisions.
Walking in the fear of God is walking in wisdom, and the instructions of wisdom often require one to lay down their life. Choosing to walk in God’s wisdom is choosing to accept the shame associated with the cross. This shame becomes an initial sign that one is walking in His wisdom. However, the glory that comes at the end justifies obedience to God as truly wise.
Prayer Points
- Let us thank God for His Word today.
- Let us ask Him to help us walk in His wisdom.
- Let us ask for grace to despise the shame associated with obedience to God and embrace the glory that follows.
