So he went out and caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch to every pair of tails, lit the torches and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.
Judges 15:4โ€“5 (NIV)

There is a song whose lyrics include, โ€œLike fire, like rain, let Your glory fall.โ€ Truly, God desires His glory to fill the whole earth (Habakkuk 2:14). And since fire is often used to represent the glory of God, we can say that God wants His fire to fill the whole earth. For this, He needs willing vessels.

As we know, many of the things recorded in the Old Covenant were allegories of the substance revealed in the New Covenant. The same can be said of the story of Samson and his conflict with the Philistines. Scripture records that at one point he caught three hundred foxes, tied them tail to tail in pairs, fastened a torch to each pair of tails, and released them into the fields (vineyards) of the Philistines. This resulted in the fields catching fire (Judges 15:4โ€“5).

Just as Samson prepared the foxes, before Jesus Christ permitted the disciples to go into all the world, Scripture records that cloven tongues of fire came upon each of them on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). These disciples went on to light their world with the fire of the Holy Spirit with which they had been ignited. Paul, Silas, and the believers with them were described as men โ€œwho have turned the world upside downโ€ (Acts 17:6) when they carried the fire of the Holy Spirit to their generation.

Like the foxes in the Old Testament and the disciples in the New Testament, God wants to send you into your world to burn for Him. Through the light of His glory in your life, people will come to the knowledge of the Lord as their Saviour. Cry out for the baptism of the Holy Spirit today, and you will become a burning one in your generation.

Prayer Points

  • Let us thank God for His Word today.
  • Let us ask Him for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit, causing His fire in our lives to burn brighter.
