You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
Romans 6:18 (NIV)

There is a point in our relationship with God where we cannot but do the will of God; it is no longer in our power not to do His will. At this point, one can be described as a slave of righteousness.

According to the English dictionary, a slave is defined as โ€œa person who is forced to work for and obey another and is considered to be their property; an enslaved person.โ€ The usage of the word force suggests that a slave is made to do whatever his or her master desires, even when he or she is not willing. To be a slave of righteousness means we are compelled to do what the Lord desires, even when it is not convenient or aligned with our personal will.

After the first man, Adam, sinned, he became a slave to sin. โ€œEveryone who sins is a slave to sinโ€ (John 8:34). Before we came to know Jesus Christ, we were all slaves to sin. When Apostle Paul spoke about his struggle with sin before knowing Christ, he said, โ€œI do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I doโ€ (Romans 7:15 NIV). The reason he could not help doing what he hated was because he was a slave to sin.

Just as we were slaves to sin in our past lives, it is Godโ€™s desire that we become slaves of righteousness. Becoming a slave of righteousness or a bondservant of God is a product of spiritual growth. When we are totally submitted to the Word, disobeying His instructions is no longer an option. Jesus, at Gethsemane, expressed that dying on the cross was not His will, yet He yielded to it. As slaves of righteousness, the will of God comes before our personal desires.

Apostle Paul, as a Christian, said, โ€œFor when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to meโ€ (1 Corinthians 9:16โ€“17 NIV). By using the word compelled, he indicated that he had no option but to do it, even if it was not his personal will. This is what it means to be a bondservant of Godโ€”a slave of righteousness.

Though we are compelled, doing the will of God willingly qualifies us for reward, for โ€œIf you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the landโ€ (Isaiah 1:19 NIV).

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His Word today, and ask Him to help us manifest as slaves of righteousness. Let us also ask Him to help us remain willing at all times.
