And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. (Luke 15:20 KJV)

In our walk with God, there is an understanding we must have very early because it will define our Christian experience. We must understand that God wants intimacy more than working for Him. He wants to be seen as Father, and when we do any work in his kingdom, it must come from a position of sonship.

In our opening text, we see the story of the prodigal son being narrated. The first lesson to note from his life was that he knew his father very well and understood his father’s character. This was why he could go to him without any fear to demand his inheritance from him. This can only happen because he has spent time with his father as a son and known him. After he had finished all his inheritance to riotous living abroad, he was still able to gain access back into the family because of his relationship with his father.

Many believers today lack a deep personal relationship with the Father and only work for him like the elder brother in our story, without taking time to build an intimate relationship with him. This can lead to a slave mindset where we see God as boss and are only interested in the reward that comes from serving Him. Obedience without intimacy can lead to frustration. We understand through intimacy the abundance in his care and also know that it belongs to us because we are His sons and daughters.

Every good father desires the best for their children, and we must know that he is the source from which we came. Therefore, building intimacy with Him and His word is wisdom because this will ultimately eliminate the possibility of our walk with Him becoming a ritual or a tick in the box to fulfil all righteousness.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him for a loving heart that will consistently pant after him for intimacy.
