For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesusโ€™ sake.
(2 Corinthians 4:5 NKJV)

ย

A young preacher once stood before a large congregation and delivered a powerful message. The people applauded, praised his confidence, and admired his eloquence. Yet later that evening, as he reflected quietly, a question troubled his heart: โ€œDid they leave speaking about me, or did they leave knowing Christ better?โ€ That moment of reflection reminds us that it is possible to preach well and still miss the true focus of the Gospel (Gal 1:10).

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he was addressing believers living in a culture that celebrated human wisdom, strong personalities, and self-promotion. In that environment, Paul made a clear and bold declaration: โ€œWe do not preach ourselves.โ€ He understood that the Gospel was never meant to elevate the messenger but to reveal the Savior (1 Cor 2:1โ€“2). The moment the preacher becomes the centre, the message loses its power (Rom 1:16).

Paul makes it clear that the heart of our message must be โ€œChrist Jesus the Lord.โ€ Not Christ as a motivational speaker, not Christ as a moral teacher only, but Christ as Lord โ€” the crucified, risen, and reigning King (Col 1:18). When Christ is preached faithfully, lives are transformed, hearts are convicted, and hope is restored (Jn 12:32). When self is preached, people may be impressed, but they are rarely changed.

Paul also describes himself as a bondservant for Jesusโ€™ sake. This reveals the posture of true ministry. To serve Christ means to walk in humility, obedience, and sacrificial love (Phil 2:5โ€“7). It means being willing to decrease so that Christ may increase, and to serve people faithfully even when there is no recognition or applause (Jn 3:30).

Beloved in the Lord, this message is especially relevant in our generation, where platforms, visibility, and personal branding are often celebrated. We must guard our hearts diligently (Prov 4:23). Our calling is not to build our own names, but to lift up the Name above every name โ€” Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). Whether we stand behind a pulpit, lead a small group, share the Gospel at work, or live out our faith quietly at home, Christ must remain the centre (Matt 5:16).

Beloved in the Lord, let us examine our motives and ask ourselves: Are we pointing people to Christ or to ourselves? May our words, our character, and our daily lives reflect Jesus clearly, so that others may encounter Him through us.

Prayer Point:

Let us thank God for the privilege of being His servants and ambassadors. Let us ask Him to purify our motives, remove pride and self-exaltation, and help us faithfully preach Christ alone.

God bless you all!
