โBut blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.โ
Jeremiah 17:7โ8 NIV
Trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Who you trust determines your hope and expectation, but when your trust is in God, your hope and expectation are assured.
Trust in the Old Covenant for the manifestation of the blessing is different from that in the New Covenant. In the Old Covenant, the blessing is dependent on the works of the law (obedience to specific instructions in the law). When you obey, you are blessed, and when you disobey, you are cursed. This means that, for those under the law, their hope for the manifestation of the blessings depended on how obedient they were to the law.
Since it was about their works, their trust was not actually in God but in their ability to keep the commandments of the law (which none was able to do except Jesus Christ). However, in the New Covenant, the manifestation of the blessings is by faith (see Galatians 3:14). Therefore, our hope for the manifestation of the blessing is not in our ability to keep the law, but in God, who has become our righteousness. This makes it assured for all.
Though the blessing is now by faith, it does not mean that there is no need for obedience. Abraham was justified, and the blessing was made assured for him when he obeyed the instruction to sacrifice his son (Genesis 22:1โ18). However, this obedience is the work of faith (not of the law), and it is the Holy Spirit who enables us to do it when we yield to Him.
Those who trust in God bear fruit in their season, not because of their works of the law, but because they believe in God. This belief in God empowers us to do those things that make us see the promises of God (His blessings) fulfilled in our lives.
