โBy their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?โ
Matthew 7:16 (NIV)
Some years ago, my mother and I were invited to a church. The minister in this church seemed highly gifted: his prophetic words were very accurate, the Word was powerfully preached, and I saw someone being delivered during the service. The entire atmosphere was filled with excitement, and we thought, โGod is here.โ
During the service, he called me out prophetically and, after sharing some words, requested that we meet after the service. When we met, he began to say and request things that I felt were not consistent with the Word of God. After this encounter, I told my mum that we should not attend the church again, explaining why I believed he was not a true man of God โ and she agreed. Not long after our meeting with him, it was discovered that he had been prophesying through a spirit of divination.
Satanโs ministers can appear as ministers of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14โ15). As a result, a distinction cannot always be made between them and true ministers of God based on spiritual gifts or preaching ability. However, as Jesus said, โby their fruit you will know themโ (Matthew 7:16).
From what is written in Galatians 5:22โ23, everything described as the fruit of the Spirit can be summed up as love. Therefore, a minister of God whose life does not reflect the love of Christ is most likely being influenced by an evil spirit.
I say โmost likelyโ because some true ministers of God are still growing and may initially lack certain manifestations of the fruit of the Spirit. Yet, as they continue walking with God, these fruits become evident. At times, discernment between true and false may take patience. Asking the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth about people is a wise way to know those who are for Him and those who are not.
In these end times, there will be many manifestations of individuals who appear genuine but are not of God. We must therefore seek discernment to rightly judge who is of the Lord. As Jesus taught, this discernment comes when we judge by their fruit.
