โ€œBut now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the LORDโ€™s command.โ€ โ€” 1 Samuel 13:14 (NIV)

Reading through Scripture, we discover a consistent pattern in Godโ€™s choices. He often begins with the least, for โ€œthe last will be first, and the first will be lastโ€ (Matthew 20:16).

Godโ€™s idea of โ€œleastโ€ can be measured in different ways. Sometimes it is physical positioning. Jacob was the younger brother, yet he was chosen over Esau (Genesis 25:23). Likewise, when Saul was chosen king, he came from the tribe of Benjaminโ€”the youngest of the sons of Jacob and smallest tribe in Israel (1 Samuel 9:21).

At other times, it is social status. Gideon confessed, โ€œMy clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my familyโ€ (Judges 6:15), yet God raised him to deliver Israel.

There is also a spiritual dimension of being least. Jesus Christ taught that unless we are converted and become like little children, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3). Childlikeness speaks of humility, dependence, and obedience.

When God chooses, He may begin with someone who appears least outwardlyโ€”as He did with Saul. But if that person loses humility, God seeks another. Saul was replaced by David, a man after Godโ€™s own heart. Though David was the youngest in his family (1 Samuel 16:11โ€“13), he maintained a childlike dependence on God.

Being chosen by God is not proof of superiority; it is evidence of grace. He makes the last first so that His glory, not human strength, will be revealed. But if pride replaces humility, God can replace the person. Scripture is clear: positions are sustained by obedience, not by being entitled.

This is a sober reminderโ€”God has replacements. Let us remain humble so that the grace that lifted us will not depart from us.

Prayer Points:

  1. Thank God for His Word and for choosing you by grace.
  2. Ask the Lord to keep your heart humble and obedient.
  3. Pray that pride will never take the place of dependence in your life.
  4. Ask for the grace to remain faithful so you will not be replaced.
