For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NIV)

The Gospel is simply the expression of God’s love for sinners, demonstrated through the forgiveness of sins. For He who knew no sin became sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Yet, despite this, the cross — which is the means by which His love was demonstrated — also revealed the depth of God’s hatred for sin. For He did not leave sin unpunished; He allowed His beloved Son to suffer as a just repayment for our sins.

The implication of this is that we should receive His love with humility and not take it for granted. If we use the knowledge of His love as an excuse to continue in sin, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, but only a fearful expectation of judgement — the same judgement that will consume the enemies of God, as expressed in Hebrews 10:26–27.

Our response to God’s love should be to love Him in return, for he or she who is forgiven much loves much (Luke 7:47). The way to love God in return is by being obedient to Him, for He said, “If you love Me, keep My commands” (John 14:15).

Obedience to God is not only a sign of our love for Him but also a demonstration of our appreciation for what He has done for us. Living a life of sin after receiving His forgiveness through faith in the Gospel shows a lack of appreciation for His love and amounts to taking Him for granted.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His Word today. Let us ask Him to help us respond appropriately to His love shown to us through the death of His Son on the cross of Calvary.
