For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say โ€œNoโ€ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.
Titus 2:12

One of the most misunderstood concepts of God in the body of Christ is grace. Some, because of this misunderstanding, have taken grace to mean that we can keep on sinning in the new covenant without being judged as it were in the old. Because of this extreme, any time grace is mentioned, some become sceptical, thinking you are looking for a reason to sin, thereby forming another extreme.

There is a need for balance in our perspective of what grace is, and no one demonstrated this balance better than Apostle Paul when he said:
โ€œFor I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of themโ€”yet not I, but the grace of God that was with meโ€ (1 Corinthians 15:9โ€“10).

From his statement, we find two dimensions of the grace of God: the qualifying grace and the empowering grace. The qualifying grace is the expression of God’s kindness, by which He makes us qualify to access the blessing, despite being undeserving if our works are considered. The empowering grace, on the other hand, is the expression of the help of God that enables us to do those things required to walk in the blessing. The empowering grace is also the grace for work.

Take, for example, that you get a job you are not qualified for, simply because you used the certificates of someone who is qualified. You are undeserving of the job, but you are there anyway. This likens to the qualifying grace, as we have access because of what Jesus did and not what we did. Now, imagine that the person whose certificate you are using is also there with you, helping you to do what is required in the job. This likens to Jesus being with us to help us do what the Father requires. This is the empowering grace.

If the person in the above illustration does not listen to the one who actually has the certificate, he or she will soon be exposed, as they will be proven incompetent. This scenario describes a situation where grace is without effect. Though by Christโ€™s obedience we have been qualified for the blessing, it is by yielding to what He teachesโ€”โ€œsay โ€˜Noโ€™ to ungodliness and worldly passions…โ€ (Titus 2:12)โ€”that we walk in the blessing. Not yielding to Him will result in His grace being without effect in our lives.

Having this balanced view of grace will help you receive with thanksgiving and with a sense of responsibility. That responsibility is for us to yield to what grace teaches.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him to help us have the right understanding of the grace of God and to help us yield to what He teaches.
