And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Matthew 4:19 KJV)

I once needed to see one of my mentors to discuss an issue that had been troubling me for two days straight. When we spoke on the phone, I asked him to come see him wherever he was, and he accepted, only to discover the distance from me to him was around four and a half hours’ drive. Without any hesitation, I got in the car a short while later and drove up to him. He then spent the next two hours teaching me things I never knew. What I got from that visit totally demystified what was troubling me. The knowledge I got far outweighed the stress of the travel, and I became a master of what was worrying me.

The Lord Jesus was making a promise in our opening scripture to some of his disciples to be, that if they accepted to follow him as his disciples, he would transform them into fishers of men in large numbers. This is a level they never dreamt of, but the Lord was going to coach them into it if they followed him.

In every endeavour and particularly our Christian journey, we need mentors and teachers to hold and guide our hands. By following, we would have collapsed time and avoid making unnecessary mistakes. The wisdom in having someone experienced guide you through a terrain you are new to or are struggling with is a strategy for increasing efficiency and productivity. This is why every new employee is either sent for training or allowed to have a mentor they can shadow and learn from in the organisation.

If you are struggling with your walk with God in an area, find someone who has overcome it and politely ask them for guidance on how to grow. This goes for other areas of life as well. Mentors are coaches, and they see what we donโ€™t see. Our Lord Jesus warned Peter about a potential catastrophe that Peter himself didn’t know about (Luke 22:31-32). Also, Joash, the boy who became king at the age of seven, was under the tutelage of Jehoiada the priest, and he did what was right as king in the sight of the LORD.

Finally, followership demands sacrifice, but in the end, it produces mastery.

Prayer point:

Let us thank God for His word today.

Let’s ask Him to connect us to our God-ordained teachers and mentors for a fulfilled destiny.
