23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Luke 9:23-24

A cross is any suffering in obedience to Jesus. Carrying our cross involves denying ourselves. Often your flesh wants to do otherwise, but the Spirit says no. 

Jesus says whoever wants to be his disciple must deny themselves. Probably no one loves suffering, so this might not be the favourite message we love to hear. Nonetheless, it is an important truth we need to always remind ourselves of. 

A man of God said, “A cross-less life is a Christ-less life”. That means, if there is no suffering you experience as a result of your faith, it could be an indicator that you are not actually following this same Christ. You could be a fan, an admirer, sympathiser of Jesus but not a disciple. And Jesus Christ said those who keep their life will eventually lose it, but those who lose it for him will save it.

Nonetheless, in all these, God is good, and He is faithful. Though we may not fully grasp the purpose of the cross or the sufferings in Christ, the bible provides us several answers or at least hints, as to why we believers have to suffer. 

The bible makes us understand that suffering in Christ produces Jesus’s godly character in us (James 1:2-4). Just as Jesus learned obedience through what he suffered (Hebrews 5:8-9). The bible tells us we are to suffer with Christ so that we can also share in his glory (Romans 8:17). Part of this glory is also His character. 

Jesus is with us by His Spirit, giving us the grace/power to do God’s will. He rewards those who live in obedience to Him both in this life and in eternity. (Mark 10:28-31)

Prayer Point: 

• Let’s thank God for giving us His only Son, Jesus. 
• Let’s pray that God, by His Holy Spirit, will empower us to carry our crosses daily with hope and Joy.
