And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:40 NKJV
Loving people can be hard at times. Especially when they seem undeserving. However, I bet if Jesus stood before you, you would do everything to please Him because you see Jesus.
Jesus shared in Matthew 25 that on the judgment day, the righteous will ask, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?’. And he will reply that whatever they did, even to the least human being, they did it to him. Although Jesus narrates it as: they didn’t know, it is intended to impart faith in us to see Jesus in everyone.
Jesus loved us dearly and exceedingly by living a sinless life, suffering for our sake and dying on the cross before rising again. And He then commanded us to love one another as He has loved us. So whatever we are doing to others, we must remember to do it in the name of God, of Jesus, who has loved us first and then instructed us to demonstrate the same love towards others.
Another way John puts it is:
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? (1 John 4 NKJV)
One of the hindrances to loving our neighbours is when we allow ourselves to focus on their weaknesses or mistakes instead of appreciating the good we see in them. One may do ten good things, but the one bad thing he does is what is highlighted the most. But again, the main motivation Jesus gave us to love is that we should do it for His sake; for what He has done already and also knowing that He is our rewarder.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for loving us first and daily. Let’s pray for God to help us see Jesus by faith in everyone. Let’s pray for the grace to obey His commandment to love one another as He has loved us.
