โ€œAnd walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.โ€
โ€” Ephesians 5:2 (NKJV)

โ€œA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.โ€
โ€” John 13:34 (NKJV)

In a world where many people put their own interests first and do not mind trampling on others to achieve their desires, God is calling us to a higher standardโ€”selflessness. At its core, selflessness is the quality of putting othersโ€™ needs, well-being, and interests above our own. It is expressed through generosity, empathy, and a willingness to sacrifice personal gain for the benefit of others.

Without selflessness, one cannot truly demonstrate the kind of love required of us under the new covenant. The love we are called to express is one that reflects Christโ€™s love. He gave Himself for our benefitโ€”the salvation of our soulsโ€”and we are instructed to love as He loved us. This means we must be willing to give of ourselves for the benefit of others.

True selflessness is helping others without expecting anything in return. The world often operates on the principle of gainโ€”people help when there is something to benefit them. But in the Kingdom of God, it is different. When Jesus instructed His followers to invite the poor, the lame, and those who cannot repay them (Luke 14:13โ€“23), He emphasised a kind of love that seeks nothing in return. This is the kind of love that God rewards.

Selflessness is also a hallmark of godly leadership. You cannot reflect the leadership of Jesus if you are not selfless. True leadership places the needs of others above personal interest. When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in John 13, He demonstrated the leadership pattern of the Kingdom. Though He was their Master, He chose to serve. Afterwards, He said, โ€œHappy are you if you do themโ€ (John 13:17), calling us to follow His example.

As we have seen, selflessness enables us to reflect the love of God, positions us for rewards in His Kingdom, and shapes us into Christ-like leaders.
