โTherefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she.โ ย โ Esther 1:19 NIV
The ways of God are past finding out (Romans 11:33). This is true even in His selection process. Reading through Scripture, we see that God can find something better than the best previously given. This calls for humility on our part, as He always has a better replacement for everyone.
One part of Scripture where we find God replacing someone previously considered the best with a better version is in the case of Vashti and Esther. The name Vashti is from the Persian/Hebrew word vashtรฎy, which means โbeautiful oneโ or โbest of women.โ From her name, she was actually called โthe best.โ However, pride found its way into Vashti, and she started running a parallel government for the women, as she organised a separate event for them, different from the one her husband was hosting (Esther 1:9).
This pride in her was revealed when she refused to respond to her husbandโs call (Esther 1:10โ12). In the events that followed, a search was made for someone better than she who was considered the best, and Esther was found.
Saul was the perfect fit for the desire of the people of Israel when they sought a king (1 Samuel 8:4โ5, 9:2). But when he demonstrated pride through disobedience to the instructions of God (1 Samuel 15:22โ23), a better option was found in David (1 Samuel 13:13โ14, 16:1).
God can do a new thing; He can create or form something better than what was considered the best yesterday. He does this when we respond in pride to His favour shown to us by choosing us for a specific task or role in His plan. This means we should carry ourselves with humility, irrespective of the revelation He has given us about ourselves. No one is irreplaceable.
Prayer Points
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs ask Him to help us walk in humility so that we will not be replaced.
