14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14

Some believers focus only on the teachings of grace while ignoring or not seeing that the bible also encourages and admonishes us to pursue Holiness or Righteousness. Not as a suggestion but as an obligation, which, if not adhered to, we risk being rejected in the end (Matthew 7:23,  1 Corinthians 9:27).

Holiness is to be like God. For God is Holy. And God desires that we should be like Him, that is, to be Holy. As believers, though, we’re made Holy the moment we believe in Jesus, we are also called to pursue Holiness without which no one will see God. 

As John Bevere puts it in his book, “The King is Coming”, we have two types of Holiness: Positional Holiness and Behavioural Holiness. Positional Holiness is what we get when we are baptised or become born again in Christ Jesus (John 3:13-16, 2 Corinthians 5:17). However, there is now a need to manifest that Holiness in our character, which can be termed behavioural Holiness. 

We can compare these two expressions of our Holiness to being married. When you get married, you become a wife or husband the very moment you pronounce your marriage vows; however, to remain married, there is a need to behave as a wife or husband, and this is a continuous pursuit. 

Similarly, although made Holy by faith in Christ, the bible repeatedly insists on our pursuing Holiness. ( Hebrews 12:14, Matthew 5:3-12, 1 Thessalonians 4:3, Matthew 6:33, Philippians 2:12,  and lots of other verses)

Paul writes how he fought till the very end (2 Timothy 4:7-8). He didn’t just fold his arms and say, “I am saved by grace, so I don’t need to do anything”. No, far from that, he fought. What was he fighting for?  To “keep the faith” to the very end.

Once again, yes, we are indeed saved by grace through faith. However, to remain saved until Jesus’s return, we need to keep the faith alive to the very end by living it out daily (Matthew 24:12-13). That means making every effort to love one another and control ourselves. And that’s exactly why the grace was made available to us (1 Corinthians 15:10). 

Prayer Point 

• Let’s thank God for His word today. 
• Let’s ask that God help us all believers to receive the entire counsel of the word of God instead of sticking only to what suits us.
