4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]” Matthew 4:4
After fasting 40 days and nights, Jesus was hungry and was tempted by the Devil to turn stones to bread, but he responded: ‘… Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”
Is this really a direct answer? Perhaps Jesus could have given a specific response limited to just the specific temptation like ‘No, I won’t turn these stones to bread because God has instructed me to fast’. Instead, in His infinite wisdom and love, He gave an answer that addresses not just the specific temptation but every similar temptation. He said ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”.
We need the word of God to live, inasmuch as we need food to live. If God doesn’t give life, no matter how much food you eat, you will not live (Psalm 127:1, Luke 12:19-21). The verse addresses our need for God’s word to satisfy our souls. Jesus was hungry physically, but by His response, He teaches us that spiritual hunger is more important than physical hunger.
In general, we all want to be satisfied, but at times we forget that our satisfaction must come first and foremost from the Spirit before any physical food can truly satisfy. The true satisfaction in our souls comes from obeying the word of God.
In another instance, Jesus reaffirms this truth that we need to satisfy our soul first, by telling his disciples that he was already satisfied when the disciples brought food to him after he had preached to the Samaritan woman (paraphrasing from John 4:31-32).
The word of God satisfies our souls. The word of God is needed to have faith, and faith is what determines the size of our miracles or our experiences. To some, Jesus had to come to their home to heal them, yet for others, just giving a command was enough; the difference was their level of faith (Matthew 8:8). And faith comes from what you know and your relationship with God.
Prayer point
Let’s thank God for this word today. Let’s pray that God will teach us to be satisfied by His word. Let’s pray for God to help us abide in His word.
