Boldness or Pride?

CALL TO PRAYER

Title: Boldness or Pride?

“And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.” (1 Samuel 17:28 KJV)

Here is a question: Is it pride, or is it boldness that comes from knowing who God has made us to be?

From our opening texts, when David stood before Goliath, his confidence was misunderstood. Eliab looked at David’s courage and called it pride. He judged what he saw outwardly but did not understand what was happening inwardly. David was not boasting in himself; David was trusting in the God who had already worked through him.

There is a difference between pride and God-given boldness.

Pride says, “I am sufficient because of myself.”

Faith says, “I am sufficient because of what God has done in me through Christ.”

When you declare who you are in Christ, you are not being proud; you are agreeing with God’s Word. When you acknowledge the gifts, strength, grace, and good works the Lord has placed in your life, you are not exalting yourself—you are giving glory to the One who gave them.

The Word of God teaches us to receive His Word with humility. Therefore, whenever God has spoken and we reject His Word because we feel unworthy, incapable, or insignificant, we must examine our hearts. Sometimes what appears to be humility can become a refusal to agree with God.

It can become pride to say, “I cannot,” when God has said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It can become pride to say, “I am not enough,” when God has declared that His grace is sufficient and that He has made us sufficient in Him.

True humility is not denying what God has placed in us; true humility is submitting to His work in our lives. Beloved, the confidence we have in Christ is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in the One who called us, equipped us, and gives us strength.

Like David, may we face every battle not with self-exaltation, but with faith in the living God. May we never mistake God-given boldness for pride.

Prayer Point:

  • Let us thank God for His Word today.
  • Let us ask God to remove every false humility that causes us to reject what He has spoken about us.
  • Let us pray for the courage to walk in our identity, purpose, and grace in Christ.
