10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10 NIV

What is the Joy of the Lord, and how can we experience it? Every human being wants to experience joy or happiness; the only difference is the path they take to achieve it. So, as believers, how can we experience the joy that comes from the Lord or the joy of the Lord?

One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22-23). A fruit is a product of growth, a process, and in a timely season the fruit is produced. That means there is a growing or an abiding to do before you can experience the joy of the Lord as a fruit.

The bible says, “Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit…”(Ephesians 4:30). Conversely, it means we can also excite the Holy Spirit, and when He is Joyful, that Joy will also pour into you since He lives in you. Therefore, this also is the Joy of the Lord; the joy that comes from knowing God is joyful about you or something, and that is your strength (I heard a preacher explain this). It gives you peace that no one can steal from you.  Finding joy in what God finds joy in (Luke 15:7).

Jesus demonstrated this when he said in John 4:34:

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

And In John 8:29

The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.

Jesus had learnt to find joy in what gives God joy, and so should we, His children.

Sometimes when doing the will of God, you may encounter pain or struggle as the flesh opposes the spirit. But if you persist, relying on His grace, you will experience the joy of the Lord at the end.

The bible says, For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  (Hebrews 12:2)

Knowing that there will be joy at the end of our obedience to God’s voice or will for our lives will motivate us to endure the cross.

Prayer Points:

  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Let’s pray that God will help us find joy in what gives Him joy, such as the salvation of souls, living with faith, loving one another, etc.
