16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16

There is the popular saying that “salvation is personal”. This is generally used to mean everyone needs to make their own personal decision to accept Jesus as Lord and saviour in order to be saved. As true as this is, praying for others, even their conversion, is very effective and powerful.

Jesus instructs us to pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). The most important thing you can pray for someone is their salvation. They can never be saved without their final decision, but if Jesus says we should pray for them, it means your prayer does make it easier for them to be saved.

Jesus prayed for Peter’s faith not to fail.

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32

One may say, “No, I can’t pray for you; you pray for yourself, and I pray only for myself”. No, that’s selfishness. We ought to pray for each other. That’s love.

Prayer is a gift and powerful tool in the hands of every believer. It’s an expression of the mercy of God that we can simply ask in prayer, and it has an effect. Therefore, we are instructed by God, as with every other gift He gives, to exploit prayer for our good and the good of others.

Not only in the bible but throughout history, there have always been powerful testimonies about the conversion of people that took place, helped by the intercession of others. The conversion of St Augustine of Hippo, a great Christian theologian, was greatly tied to his mother’s persistent intercession for 17 years. Do you also know the Apostle Paul’s conversion could be linked to prayers like that of Steven when he was stoned? (Acts 7:54-60).

Beloved, don’t give up on praying for the conversion of that loved one or that old friend who is still in the world, despite you’ve tried telling him about the great light you have found. God is working; just keep praying.

Prayer Points

Let’s thank God for the gift of intercession.

Let’s ask the Lord to help us utilise this gift of intercession to intercede for the salvation of those we know around us and beyond.
