Topic: Becoming Great in Life

“The greatest among you will be your servant.” Matthew 23:11 NIV
There is an innate desire in the heart of every human being to become great in life. This desire is consistent with the image and likeness in which we were created, for God describes Himself as a great King:
“For I am a great King,” says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 1:14)
This is the reason the disciples of Jesus were arguing amongst themselves about who would be the greatest. Jesus Christ did not rebuke them for having a desire to be great; rather, He taught them how to attain true greatness. This was important because, as a result of the fall of Adam, the devil has distorted mankind’s understanding of certain Kingdom principles, including how to become great.
From what Jesus taught His disciples, those who will become great are those who humble themselves and serve. Jesus said:
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” Matthew 20:26 NIV
He also said, “The last will be first, and the first will be last” (Matthew 20:16; Matthew 19:30). He was teaching that the person who humbles himself or herself to become the least by taking the position of a servant will ultimately become great in the Kingdom of God.
It takes a heart that honours others to serve, and it takes humility to serve. God rewards humility by giving grace:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6 NIV
Grace is what enables a person to rise into the position God has ordained for them. The advantage of following God’s path to greatness, instead of the world’s approach of oppressing, manipulating, and subjecting others, is that it produces peace among brethren and creates room for others to flourish as well.
True greatness is therefore not measured by how many people are beneath us, but by how many people we are willing to serve, honour, and help rise.
Becoming great in life is God’s will for His children when greatness is understood according to His Kingdom principles. As we honour and serve others, God gives us grace to manifest this aspect of our inheritance in Him.

- Let’s thank God for His Word to us today.
- Let’s ask God to help us humble ourselves and willingly serve others.
- Let’s ask God to give us the grace to pursue greatness according to His Kingdom principles.
- Let’s pray that our lives will become a blessing to others as God lifts us into the places of influence He has ordained for us.
