And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. (1 Samuel 16:1 KJV)

When I first started out as a young engineer, my manager had a line, and he would usually say, “no man is an island” when he saw any form of misbehaviour and would take decisive action even if it meant relieving a person of their duties. What that meant was that you are dispensable and can be replaced no matter what. That you are not there does not incapacitate God. His agenda and purpose are superior to the vessel, and He will prioritise His purpose over the vessel because His agenda will always come to pass.

Saul started out well as a king after the anointing of the Lord came upon him. He was transformed into another man and began to win mighty wars because of the hand of God upon his life. In our opening scripture, we saw how he was rejected because he felt too important and became selective in obeying God’s command and paid dearly for it.

Whatever you are doing for God or in the house of God, it should be done with utmost delight and gratitude for the privilege to be useful in His hands. Elijah thought he was the only one who did not bow to Baal but received a shocker when he was told there were seven thousand more priests who upheld the name of God and did not bow (1 Kings 19:14-18). Feeling too important may bring pride, which might result in a fall from grace. No matter who you are and what you are doing, remain humble.

Finally, it is not in the numbers or multitude because God can achieve what He wants to do with little. Look at the army of Gideon, from thirty-two thousand to three hundred men (Judges 7: 1-7), and God still gave them victory against a mighty opposing army.

Keep disobedience and pride very far away while approaching Him like a child will when approaching his or her father. This was Daniel’s secret to his relevance in Babylon under three different kings.

Prayer point:

  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Father, please keep me humble and useful in your hands all the days of my life.
