Fight the Good Fight
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
– 1 Timothy 6:12
Fight means to strive vigorously for something. There are two types of fights: bad fight and good fight. A bad fight is a fight with a bad motive. Some examples of bad fight are revenge, sports arguments, politics, hatred and greed for money, racism e.g. Ghana vs Nigeria/ White vs Black, fighting over a boy/girl, fight between husband and wife, religion, etc. A good fight is a fight in relation to our faith. The word โFightโ, I will say, is not a popular word among Christians because we are taught to be peaceful, quiet, and tranquil. However, there are some good fights we are supposed to fight in order to be fruitful and successful in our Christian life. I would like to share with you some of these good fights. ย
Firstly, we have to fight to be led by the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthian 14: 10, we know that there are many voices e.g. voice of flesh, mind, external voices, voice of the spirit, and none of these voices is without significant. So many people always ask, how do I know this is the will of God? My brothers and Sisters in Christ, there are no short-cuts, Itโs a fight! We have to spend regular time in the presence of God, praying and worshipping to be able to differentiate the voice of the spirit from the other voices. No one can do this on your behalf; you have to fight this fight yourself!
Beloved in the Lord, we have to also fight to be Spiritual or a strong Christian. Why is this a Fight? This is because it is not natural to be strong. The spirit is always willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:4). Naturally who thinks about God? You feel like sleeping, watching a film/series, having sex, gossiping, doing something bad etc. We must create the atmosphere that makes it easier to think about God by filling our phones with Christian messages, Gospel songs and devotions. We must fight to have a daily quiet time, prayers and regular fasting. These are not easy and requires a lot of discipline on your part (1 Corinthian 9: 27). Itโs a fight!
Last but not the least, fighting the devil is a good fight. Ephesians 6:12 says, we do not wrestle against flesh and blood butโฆIt is the easiest thing to think about that you are fighting flesh and blood. Donโt be tempted to think that flesh and blood are your enemies. Why do we always think like this? This is because flesh and blood are used to fight and implement evil against us. It could be your mum, uncle, friend, neighbor, boss, colleague etc. However, there is something behind the flesh and blood (demons, principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, spiritual wickedness) and that is what we are supposed to fight against. Letโs put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18) and use the authority we have in Christ and the weapon of prayer to destroy every work of the devil and his agents.
Brethren, letโs fight these fights in relation to our faith so we can be successful in our Christian life and at the end, we can all boldly join Apostle Paul and say,โ We have fought the good fight.โ There are many rewards awaiting us in Heaven.
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs ask God to give every believer the Grace and Strength to fight these good fights in relation to our faith.
