2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4 NKJV
Before you are invited to write an exam, you must be a registered student. And as a registered student, you have been taught in the classroom. Therefore, the exam becomes the means by which you can prove that you learnt and receive a certificate or stamp of approval; Tested and Trusted!
Just like an exam, trials come to give us an opportunity to apply our faith and our knowledge. After all, they say practice makes perfect.
The opening verse says Trial produces patience. It means it usually takes a while. Doesn’t always go away immediately. But you need to keep believing, keep trusting and keep obeying the Lord. As we do, patience is working in us. We are changing, being transformed, being moulded, refined, being perfected, matured.
Each trial is allowed to mature some aspects of us so that after all the trials we can be complete, lacking in no area; lacking nothing. But we have to endure it and remain faithful while it lasts. We have to be joyful and thankful, believing that God is using the trial to perfect us.
It may be a trial of unemployment. Do you keep trusting God for provision, or are you going to drop your faith and seek compromising ways out, like dishonest gains or unholy acts?
It may be a trial of singleness. Do you keep trusting God’s timing, provision and guidance, or are you going to drop your faith and seek temporal, unholy sexual gratification or just settle for an unbeliever, thereby idolising marriage?
It may be a trial of persecution. Do you keep trusting God for deliverance and redemption, or are you going to drop your faith and return to your old ways and old folk?
The trial is but for a while, and after holding on in faith till the very end, we will obtain a great reward both in this life and in the life to come. The bible says:
“fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
After you have endured the trial till the end and been made perfect by what you endured through faith, you will now become perfect and ready to be entrusted with treasures and responsibilities. (1 Peter 5:10, 2 Timothy 2:10-12)
However, just like one can fail an exam, you may also fail a trial, and the Lord still calls us in that case to see our need for growth and seek help to grow in faith.
Prayer Point:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s ask God to help us thank Him when we face any form of trial, knowing that through it, areas of our character are being perfected or matured.
