Overcoming Sin Key 1: Thanksgiving
By:ย Daniel Idehen
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lordโฆโฆ..
(Rom 7:24-25 KJV)
Despite God has given us victory over sin through the death and resurrection of our LORD, Jesus Christ, a lot of people still struggle with sin. This struggle with sin many times affect their confidence in fulfilling the call of God on their lives, andย they find it difficult to come before God because of their guilt. This need not be, especially now that all we need to live free has been given to us by God. Freedom/deliverance from bondages comes by the right application of knowledge (Prov. 11:9).ย Follow me on this series as we explore this subject.
Reading through Romans 7, we find Apostle Paul highlighted his struggle with sin. By carefully considering His speech, it will be obvious that the account was before he met Christ. However, this struggle with sin can also be experienced by a Christian.ย The salvation Christ brought has been deposited in our Spirit, but there is need to work out this salvation for us to experience its benefits in our lives: This can be inferred from Philippians 2:12. One way to achieve this was revealed in Paulโs narration of his struggle with sin. In verse 24 of Romans Chapter 7, Paul exclaimed โWho shall deliver me from the body of this death!โ (This statement is a proof that the account of his struggle with sin was before he met Jesus). Then he followed his cry for deliverance with the statement โI thank God through Jesus Christ our Lordโ.ย Thanksgiving is the first key on how to overcome sin.
Thanksgiving is the greatest proof of faith. Some of the greatest miracles Jesus performed were done after He thanked God (Matthew 14:19, John 11:42). The Word of God has declared that we have been set free from sin (Romans 6:18). Knowing this, we respond to God by thanking Him for it. This should be done despite the situation might be contrary (despite the sign of the sin may still be there). As we do this, God sees our action as faith, and makes the freedom we desire to manifest. This faith is similar to what Abraham manifested: for he gave glory to God despite his body was as good as dead (Romans 4:20). One way we give glory to God is by thanksgiving.
Prayer Point:
Let take time out today to thank God for the victory He has given to us over sin. Let us also ask Him to bring the entire body of Christ to the acceptance of this truth.ย
God bless you all
