For a righteous man may fall seven times
And rise again,
But the wicked shall fall by calamity.
Proverbs 24:16 NKJV
Who is a righteous man? The bible tells us the righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17). Therefore, we can define a righteous man as one who lives by faith. The righteous believe what God says, whether by the written or spoken word, to be true. And because they believe, they are empowered to act rightly.
However, like the Apostle Peter, there are times when our faith is weak, and we fall into temptation, acting contrary to what we believed. In such moments, the Holy Spirit convicts us and calls us to repentance. You can either continue wallowing in guilt and shame or repent and accept God’s mercies and start again to do what is good, pleasant and acceptable to God. The bible says in Hebrews 4:15-16:
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Jesus, our high priest, sympathises with our weaknesses, though He didn’t sin. In other words, it means that Jesus understands, but He does not condone. He knows the struggles, the temptations, the anxieties, the fears, the worries that lead to sin, etc. Since He understands but doesn’t condone, He still calls us to perfection (Matthew 5:48). So if we fall, we get up and rise again. Again and again.
Does it mean that we should use grace as a license to willfully perpetually disobey God? No, far from it. We ought to pursue righteous living(Matthew 6:33). Righteousness is our new identity in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17, 2 Corinthians 5:21). But if or when we fall, we are encouraged by God’s word to repent and return to the Lord.
However, to be one who continually rises again if or when they fall, you must be one who constantly listenly listens to the word of God and prays. As He speaks, we are convicted and can repent.
Prayer Point:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s pray that God will help anyone who may be feeling too far from God to repent today and return to the Father before it is too late.
- Let’s pray that we would not be discouraged by our failures but will always ask for mercy and seek grace to rise again and again.
