Topic: Don’t Lose Your Expectation

“For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.” — Proverbs 23:18 (KJV)
In God’s relationship with man, He declares the end from the beginning. He does this so that we may carry a confident expectation of the fulfilment of what He has spoken. That expectation becomes the bedrock of our faith.
However, the trials of life often threaten to make us lose our expectation—seeming to suggest that God’s promises have failed. An example of someone who faced such a battle was Job. In the midst of severe affliction, his words revealed how close he came to relinquishing his hope.
Chapters 29 and 30 of the book of Job capture this tension vividly: in Job 29, he recalled the honour and favour that once attended his righteous walk; in Job 30, he lamented the stark opposite he was experiencing. Many believers walk through similar valleys today, where delay and hardship tempt them to doubt the integrity of God’s Word.
Yet the promise that the expectation of the righteous shall not be cut off carries an implicit reminder: seasons will come when it looks as though all hope is gone. In such times, we must encourage ourselves in the Lord, anchor our souls, and boldly declare our trust in Him.
Though Job was pushed to the edge, God ultimately restored him and turned his captivity around. He will do the same for you. Hold fast to your hope. Refuse to let go of your expectation. He who promised is faithful.
