The Three Compartment Of Hell

And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there (Luke 16:26).

Last week I spoke about ,,Hellfire Is Realโ€œ and today I want to use the opportunity to explain in simple terms the 3 different Compartments of Hell awaiting those who arenโ€™t yet saved.

In the Old Testament, the topic of Hell wasnโ€™tย  explained or in their time, the understanding of Hell wasnโ€™t yet developed, which makes the New Testament the best place to get better understanding about Hell.

In Luke 16, Jesus told a story about Lazarus and the rich man. Abraham and Lazarus who believed in God were seen in a place called Paradise (not Paradise in Heaven). This place was kept for those who believed in God in the Old Testament. Since they were still sinners, they were kept there until the death of our Lord Jesus Christ which made a way for them to be in Heaven with God (1 Peter 3:18-19).ย  This means that, when Christians die, we will not go to Paradise (not Heaven Paradise) but we will go to Heaven directly because we have found righteousness through Christ.ย

The first place in Hell is called Hades. Hades is a place of Torments, where the rich man was and lifted his eyes to call for help from Abraham and Lazarus ( Luke 16:23-24).This man in question was tormented not because he was rich when he was alive but because he was wicked.

There is one thing I would want to make clear, the moment you get to the place of the dead (Luke 16:23) there will not be anyone that can come through to help you, neither will there be someone you can run out to for refuge. Abraham explained this to the rich man when He asked for help and said:ย  โ€žโ€ฆSon, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there โ€œ ( Luke 16:25-26).

Please note this, the rich man remembered all what he did when Abraham mentioned his actions towards Lazarus ( Luke 16:27-28). Which means when we die, our minds will still be intact. The only thing dead will be our bodies, but our souls (mind, will, emotions) will still be alive.

The second Compartment of Hell is called Tartarus. This place was kept for the falling angels who were influenced by satan. These falling angels are kept there in chains awaiting judgement. For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment ( 2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6).

Hades and Tartarus are places meant for those who are yet to be judged to their final destinations. They are awaiting the second Judgement which is the Great White Throne Judgement.ย

This is explained in Revelation 20:11-14: ย

โ€žAnd I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before Godโ€™s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books.ย ย The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds.ย Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.ย And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.โ€œ

This leads us to the third and last Compartment called Gehenna ,,The Lake Of Fireโ€œ. Gehenna is not Hades. In Gehenna, wicked dead exist in both body and soul. This place is still empty awaiting those who will receive their last Judgement on the day our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ returns. The suffering in Gehenna is eternal.

Beloved, these places arenโ€™t destinations any of us should be. Let us therefore accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and personal saviour so our names will be written in the Book of Life and we can later be with God in Heaven.

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word. Letโ€™s ask for a heart of Obedience to live a life pleasant in the sight of God, so we may be with Him when we die.ย
