The Most Important Prayer of Your Life

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, โ€œMy Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.โ€

Matthew 26:39 NLT

As Christians, sometimes deciding on what to pray about can be a bit difficult. Should I be praying for myself, ministry, health, wealth and prosperity, new phone, marriage?ย  Sometimes our prayers are also influenced by the situation we are in, to the extent that we spent majority of our time praying for that problem to be solved. However, I believe the most important prayer in the Life of a Christian and that which we should spend a lot of time praying about is for the Will of God to be done. Let’s look at our Lord Jesus Christ, at a very critical moment of His life in the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed for the Will of God to be done (Matt 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-41). One may ask, why should we pray for Godโ€™s Will to be done?

We should pray for Godโ€™s Will because He can do anything and everything. Our Lord Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane knew that its only God who has the ability to remove the cup of suffering and as a result, prayed for Godโ€™s Will to be done (Mark 14:36). In the sight of man, a lot of things may seem impossible but with God, everything is impossible. Don’t put your trust in men because you will be disappointed. Don’t put your trust in your strength and ability because they may fail you. Put your trust in God! Your prayers will be answered as you spend regular time before the Lord praying for His Will to be done.

Also, there is a cup of suffering or difficulty that every Christian will drink on this earth (Mark 14:36) so pray that God may or may not remove it, according to His Will. Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:9 about โ€œThe Mystery of His Will.โ€ The Will of God is mysterious and sometimes it doesn’t go the way we expect. As a good Christian, you may lose someone dearly, lose your Job or go through a very tough situation that will make you ask yourself if itโ€™s the Will of God, devil or a consequence of your own mistake. However, we know that God sometimes allow these sufferings in order to strengthen our faith and build a character in us.

Praying for the Will of God to be done ensures that God’s will happen. God’s will in your life may not happen if you don’t pray. In the Bible, People prayed and changed the course of history. For example, Abraham prayed to change God’s original plan for Sodom and Gomorrah (), Moses prayed for the Israelites to win the war against the Amalekites (Exodus 17:11). God’s Will doesnโ€™t just happen automatically, you have to pray!

In the Book, โ€œPlead your case by Kenneth Hagin,โ€ his friend fell from a roof-top and died, and as he prayed for him, he came back to life. Afterwards, his friend narrated what happened when he died. He was in Heaven with the Lord Jesus and didnโ€™t want to come back to earth but the Lord has to send him back because of Kenneth Haginโ€™s prayer. Also, the Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke fell sick during one of his missionary work in Africa. In that very night, a certain lady received a word from the Lord to pray for him and he was healed as a result.

Beloved in the Lord, letโ€™s forget about always asking God for things and say that Lord let your will be done and not my will, but your will be done.
