The Most Important Prayer of Your Life-Part 2

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, โ€œMy Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.โ€

-Matthew 26:39 NLT

In my previous Call to Prayer, I shared a message on the most important prayer in the life of a Christian which is to pray consistently for the Will of God to be done in every aspect of our lives. We also learnt that our prayers should not be influenced by our current situation but rather learn from our Lord Jesus Christ, who at a very critical moment of His life in the Garden of Gethsemane, prayed for the Will of God to be done (Matt 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-41). I personally believe this prayer shouldnโ€™t just be prayed once in a blue moon but should be prayed regularly. Therefore, I would like to share with you other reasons why Christians should spend majority of our time praying for the will of God to be done.

We have to pray for Godโ€™s Will because He has great and wonderful plans for us, which are for our own good (Jere 29:11). The Lord recently blessed me with a son and as a father, I personally have plans for my son including him serving the Lord and impacting his Generation. Every parent wants their children to grow to become responsible, achieve great things, and exceed the level they (Parents) reached. If we sinful humans have good plans for our children, how much more our heavenly Father? God as a loving Father has many good plans for His children. Unlike humans, God is Faithful, dependable, loves unconditionally, and always quick to show Mercy even when we offend Him.

Also, we should pray for Godโ€™s Will because our Spirits are willing (Mark 14:38). If you ask every Christian if he/she is willing to pray for long time, fast regularly and serve God seriously, the answer will be a big โ€œYesโ€. ย However, is that what we do practically? The answer is No! So, spending regular time to pray for the Will of God gives the willing Spirit the chance to serve God. The longer you stay with somebody, the closer you become with that person. I believe itโ€™s about time Christians come to the realization that our will is not good, and we need the perfect Will of God for our lives.

Believers should pray for Godโ€™s Will because the flesh is weak and may cause you problems (Mark 14:38). Our Lord Jesus became worried when He returned from His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane only to find His disciples sleeping, and thatโ€™s when He admonished us to watch and pray because the flesh is weak. Flesh is made up of the invisible part e.g. jealousy, envy, hatred, and physical part e.g. fighting, fornication, eating. Spending regular time to pray for the Will of God strengthens you against temptations and overcome the lust of the flesh.

Beloved in the Lord, letโ€™s forget about always asking God for things and spend regular time saying, โ€œLord let your will be done and not my will, but your will be done.โ€
