And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? (Zech 3:1-2 KJV)

In the place of Prayer, there are mountains to be surmounted and hills standing as a barrier from accessing the throne of grace. It is therefore pertinent that we are in right standing when approaching the royal Court of our God. If iniquity is found, Satan, who is an opportunist will take charge of the session, to deny believers access to the throne which is legitimate enough for access denial.

In our text today, the Lord was showing Zechariah in a vision the helplessness of Joshua the high priest while standing in the Holy courts of God. This is a person everyone was referred to as the “High Priest”, who they come to with their petitions, prayer requests and sacrifices. His title of being a man of God was irrelevant because he had iniquity and this made his garment filthy and the devil capitalised on this.

The Holy Spirit through David offered us an insight into the mind of God concerning this matter in Ps 24:4 “…..He that hath clean hands and a pure heart….”. Although Christ has died for our sins and we are now priests and kings, it is not a license to to live our lives in an unacceptable way to the Lord. We must be watchful not to create an entry point for Satan into our communion with God because he is always looking for that loophole. Genuinely, most believers desire to live right but there is the Spirit of error that the enemy deploys as part of his duty as we saw in the lives of Ananias and Saphira who had good intentions but got corrupted by the Spirit of error and paid dearly for it.

Joshua the high priest received mercy in the sight of the Lord and Satan was rebuked but this is an example to learn from so we can appraise our standing and if there is iniquity in us, he is a faithful Father if we confess and ask him for mercy. Our relationship with him takes priority above all else and it is wisdom to jealously guard it.
