A Stronghold For The Oppressed

โ€œThe Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.โ€ย 

Proverbs 9:9

Most people experience feelings of depression at some point in their life. Sometimes it happens when you lose someone close to you, having relationship issues, experience a sudden negative change in life, etc. However, one can also be depressed without any particular cause. There are different ways people deal with depression; talking to a therapist, doing your favourite hobbies, exercising more, leaning on a friend or a family member and turning to God, which I believe is the best option.ย 

God has given us His Word for a good reason (Jere. 29:11). Thatโ€™s why the word of God is a great inspiration and comfort to many of us. God knew that we need His truthful words to depend on, because there will be days of troubles and tribulations, and thatโ€™s exactly when we will need Him the most ( Matt.11:28).

When Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, he admonished them to only think about things thatย  are good and of good report. โ€œFinally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableโ€”if anything is excellent or praiseworthyโ€”think about such thingsโ€ (Phil. 4:8). Yes, we do face tribulations or challenges in life but when we take our time to be grateful for the things we overcame or reflect on the things that are good, it will uplift our spirits. When we take our minds off our problems, pains, trials or tribulations and focus on the positive aspects of our lives like the gift of life, salvation and good health, we overcome any form of anxiety which results to depression.ย 

Depression is a bad spirit that can weaken your energy andย  make you feel incapable to even do the little things in life. But remember this, Christ is always there for you and through Him we find the strength and the will to get through the darkest times (Philippians 4:13).

Beloved, Jesus knew that difficult days will come. He knows that depression can make you feel like you are alone in this world and that no one loves or understands you. Thatโ€™s why the word of God reminds us not to lean on our own understanding but rather trust God, acknowledge Him and He will make our paths straight (Pro. 3:5-6). It doesnโ€™t matter how bad your situation is, just know that you serve a God who is able to solve every problem, even those that seem impossible in the sight of men.ย 

Let us therefore always focus our minds on the things above. God has a good place prepared for you and I, and has promised eternal life for those who believe in Him. As a child of God you have all you need in Christ, and thereโ€™s nothing that can take away the loveย  your father in Heaven has for you. The evil spirits canโ€™t have a hold on you because Jesus has released you from all the bondages of the devil. You have been set free forever! Who the son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36). You are not only special as a child of God but you are also loved beyond words!ย

Letโ€™s thank God for the answers to our prayers. Letโ€™s pray for God to help those battling depression, loneliness, fear and hopelessness to regain their faith in Him.ย
