And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. [10] And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:9-10 KJV)

I was having a discussion with an elderly friend some years back about the power of words and he shared his sonโ€™s story with me. The young man had listened to a sermon on confessions and declarations and wanted to prove whether itโ€™s true. He bought himself two flower pots and every morning after watering them, he will start cursing one and blessing the other. Within 2 weeks, even though he was watering them together, the one receiving the curses had withered and died while the other with the blessing flourished. This to me, is a clear demonstration of the power words carry and should never be trivialized.

Looking through our text today, there are a few things that stood out and we will look at some of them:

1. Tame your tongue
When we go through trials, a lot of believers are quick to declare how unfortunate they are and question God on why He is silent about their predicament. I have once heard a woman asking what was God doing when her marriage broke down, in a bid to justify her withdrawal from serving God. It is definitely not wise to use oneโ€™s mouth to put oneself in captivity and the path of destruction( Ecc. 5:6). Anyone doing this is clearly ignorant of Godโ€™s love.

2. Donโ€™t joke with naysayers
When someone jokingly calls you a negative name or makes a negative pronouncement about situations you are involved in, donโ€™t just laugh about it as if itโ€™s nothing. Reject such pronouncement immediately and declare the truth which is the word of God concerning you. Remember, silence means consent.

3. Pray, donโ€™t wish or complain
The pattern today among Christians is to keep complaining to everyone about their circumstances and wishing it will change overnight. Matthew 7:11 shows us Godโ€™s stance when we pray that He is readily available to grant us our good heart desires. So, stop wishing like the man beside the pool of Bethesda and make prayer a lifestyle and see if He will not endow you with that spiritual gift that you so desire.

Prayer point:
Letโ€™s thank Him for His word today. Letโ€™s pray that only the plan and purpose of God concerning our lives and the body of Christ as a whole shall come to pass.

God bless you!
